Why Sunflowers?

Why Sunflowers?

Sunflowers (Helianthus) are considered phytoremediators; they have the ability to remove heavy metals and radioactive material from the soil.

This technique was used after the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown and is currently being used at the Fukushima nuclear site in Japan.

Because it is a plant, one of its main energy sources is the sun. The relationship between sunflowers and the sun is symbolic of the relationship between teachers and our students.

It is up to us (the sun) to provide the nutrition our students (the sunflowers) need to grow and make the world a better place.
